Mrs. Carmen Matz
Pre-Kindergarten Teacher
About Mrs. Matz
I graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Special Education for grades K-12, and have 35 years of educational experience, 10 of which was as a teacher in my own classroom.
I have taught in both resource rooms and self-contained settings for students in grades K – 5. I stayed home to raise my children, but was active in schools, Scouts and camps as a teacher, leader, cafeteria worker, program director, or teacher’s aide.
Teaching Philosophy
As a Catholic preschool teacher, I believe my role is to inspire and support young learners; to empower them to be curious, to listen to them and validate their feelings, and to respect them as they learn to navigate and begin to process their place in our world. Through play-based, hands-on, and guided activities that reflect children’s interests, my students build on their strengths and gradually challenge themselves.
My role as an educator is not only to foster growth in social, emotional, and academic skills, but to also cultivate the seeds of faith and moral understanding in each child. Learned through active participation, celebrating the Mass with their families, and learning about Liturgical seasons as well as saint days, feast days and Holy Days help cultivate a Catholic culture and a vibrant faith life.
As Mr. Rogers said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
